Nobrow

i recently picked up a copy of Nobrow magazine no.3 for two reasons.. the first being that i know they have featured and printed the work of Ben Newman in the past and secondly because they seem to be very popular in an underground fanzine kind of way. (i like Ben Newman's work btw).

A few of us have kicked around the idea of printing our own fanzine/magazine since we were introduced to Le Gun....This was so we could just get our work out there to the world... each having 4-5 pages and that would be it. something for the portfolio and not linked with the briefs we received during the course, a way for us to say what we want and do what we want.

Nobrow allows artists to showcase their work in a printed format - which reminds me of the Paper Tigers essay featured in Varoom no. 10 - but it seems to be fitting to a current trend of naive art becoming popular rather than out of a love for the method/process of printing a magazine. Le Gun, started out printing their own work and then running printing submissions as awareness grew... they bought their first printing press themselves and did limited edition runs, where as Nobrow only number their first 3000. Im not saying Nobrow is wrong in what they do, only that it is different.

I imagine that if we get our shit together and produce illustrations that we want to print in a book then I'd want to hand bind and bound them. I've made a few little, simple booklets in the past and I also found a great tutorial via GigPosters.com on how to bind and make covers for books : http://www.gigposters.com/forums/process/138307-process-making-some-books.html

and also found a few others since:

cd case printing: http://www.gigposters.com/forums/process/150339-my-first-print-cd-cases.html

its nice to see the process people go through during screen printing.. its what appeals to me I think.. the fact that you need to figure the order in which to print your work, you build a design up over layers and its a hand on approach.. (im slowly losing interest in over using digital methods to produce work)...

Negotiating with myself... (1st rant of 3rd year)

I feel like I've hit a wall already and I've only been working on my personal project for a short time, but the last couple of days have actually helped me clear my mind a little.. sort of.. let me take you back to summer...

The D&AD competition brief is quite possibly the biggest turning point in my career so far... that project started with me trying force the brief to fit my personal interests of motorbikes... following routes/directions.. having to stick to guidelines and limited freedom. The idea seemed well received amongst the tutors but it just didnt seem to click with me completely... maybe it was the simplistic graphic style that I was reducing the work down to or the fact that it looked as if I was trying to be a little preachy with my ideas. I then doodled a couple of little sketches on a more personal jokey theme... and these small insignificant thumbnails quickly developed into the piece that ended up winning.

Now what Im trying to say is that for the last 3 years I have been altering my own work to suit what i "think" my tutors want to see. Now this isnt due to me just bein a complete brown noser, but that I respect the feedback and ideas I get from talking to them... after all, they are working professionals and so must know what theyre on about. I look at it as, if I follow their advice then I am more likely to succeed within the real world/industry because they wont steer me in the wrong direction. However, the one piece I actually like/enjoyed working on and what I felt was my own -dare i say it - "STYLE", was actually the most successful piece I have created so far and wasnt suggested by tutors. It came completely from my own interests and personality which suggests that I should stop trying to please others and just do what I enjoy doing! There have been many conversations about following/taking onboard the tutors advice between myself and my peers and most recently I was reminded that they wont be at my side to hold my hand for the rest of my life...

I have to thank James and Eleanor really for this kick up the arse/motivation to do more of my own stuff. If I keep trying to please everyone else then i'll never be happy doing it. I need to believe in myself and my work, not everyone will like what i do... but who cares? I need to stop worrying, after all that is what my D&AD resistance piece was about.. running with scissors is becoming my own personal metaphor for taking risks, having confidence in my ability and to stop worrying but to enjoy myself no matter what I do.

With that said, my current negotiated project has felt a little stale and slowly ground to a halt recently.... I started with the idea of developing my own characters based on peoples fears/nightmares but I wanted to take the scary part out of it and turn these fears into cute monsters who only want to be your friend... I can draw but Im not really much of a writer... so that was pushed to the side in favour of looking at reinterpreting existing characters. Rather than just recreating these characters in my own style (e.g. Ronald McDonald) I wanted to create something that had a bit more purpose.. only I didnt want to be preachy again... I was worried that I would have to come up with some politically aimed statement to say within my drawing in order for the piece to "work".... that isnt something I enjoy doing nor am i going to do. Then the idea of showing the characters development over the years was suggested.. trying to show the history of the character and their personality through metaphors maybe..?? but it felt more like i was only doing this to give my initial idea a bit more credit, like it wasnt strong enough to start with... and I dont really want to say anything about specific companies through their mascots so....?? (dont get me wrong, the research into the companies ethics reminds me of the water project, having to read around a subject you might not really be interested in.. which is quite useful to do)

anyway... the moral of this post is Im going to do what I want, in the style I want...

my version of Mickey Mouse is more along the lines of what I like doing, graffiti inspired, thick outlined, cartoony, fun stuff that makes me laugh. I just imagined that Disney would never let Mickey die, and they'd keep him locked up in a cupboard only wheeling his dusty skeleton out to show the shareholders at corporate meetings and events... Im currently thinking more along the lines of looking at how 'I' imagine popular characters will appear in 10 or 20 years, no serious comments, not sophisticated enough to be satirical but just FUN... more shallow and lowbrow than anything .... im more excited and happy about this too!

Running With Scissors

As part of our 3rd year in Illustration, the course kicks us out into the real world in a myriad of ways but they don't send us out unprepared. I need to come up with an 'artefact' other than a bog standard business card that I could pass out to prospective clients or even sell and start up some sort of business via Etsy (or something similar).

I'm actually all over the place with this! There's so much I want to do with this but my prefered ideas will take a lot of time off other projects... but I was thinking of using my D&AD poster design for a little while (until I come up with some other work I prefer) and making the running boy into a 3D model. I already collect a lot of vinyl figures with the intention of making my own in the near future, so why not start now with my own character? I currently have a friend making a 3D computer model of my character so I could send it to either Shapeways or ThingLAB...The only downside I have seen to this is that I will need to throw a lot of money at it for a one-off professionally. I could sculpt my own by hand and then make a mold from it to then cast many more but it's time once again.. I have a couple of side projects going on that I want finished before I spend any prolonged periods of time on this but thats down to my own time management and prioritising.

I also have a habit of collecting stickers too, i think this stems from my interest in skateboarding, snowboarding and graffiti culture over the last 10 years, but it means I've been thinking of printing my own stickers which could then be posted anywhere and everywhere! Although I lack any rebellious instinct to vandalise public or personal property with stickers, it would be left up to the individual where they posted my stickers and a such I could reach a wider audience than just sticking them up around Manchester... I'd also need to look into the legal ramifications of other people posting stickers with MY name about and whether I'd be held responsible.

With the sticker idea, i have already been trying to source local companies who print them and the main one I have come across is Edge Stickers based in Wilmslow. I received a sample sticker pack from them and so I have requested a quotation on printing my 'Running with Scissors' at approx 10cm x 13cm. We shall see what they come back with...

Also, Sticker Robot have run a competition in ComputerArts: Projects magazine last month and I've just discovered their deadline is tomorrow (7/10/10) so theres still time for me to enter my 'Running with Scissors' again... You never know! The prize is 1,000 of your stickers printed.

What I like about StickerRobot is how they screenprint their works (as featured in the magazine). its suddenly like all these magical and mysterious companies and how they make their products are slowly becoming less elusive and we the public/artists can see a little more what happens to our artwork or even steal ideas and set it up at home ;) like I did with my own screenprinting gear.. I shall get photos of that up eventually!

7x7xdeath

Hopefully I have seen the back of this project now! Don't get me wrong, it's been great to have real world experience of creating a piece of art, passing it on to a design team who then come back with alterations and then chatting with the printers who need to receive the artwork in a specific format but thank **** it's done!

Starting with my own work, I was already happy with my main image but it was the spot illustration that didnt quite sit right on a page or look like part of a set. I think having the summer away from the piece of work definitely helped, as sometimes you can be sat so close to an image that you cant see whats wrong until you step back. Luckily, I feel I have made the spot image more dynamic and I'm actually prefer it when compared to the main one as it holds more character in my opinion. Originally I was using the halftone screen printing technique as a way of holding the two images together and using the same colours in hopes that people would just assume they belong together but now I hope the audience will see a relationship not only between the characters in the story but also between my images.

Because I am looking at character as a theme within my work, I'm happy (for the time being) with how the images work. The story I was given to illustrate didn't focus on character descriptions too much - we are told certain aspects such as the female character has red hair and the male is wearing a shirt, shoes etc - and so I had to make sure I wasn't trying to create specific or generic characters. I have suggested the female character by using elements such as her hair, hand and lips to form a seductive womanly image. Similarly I have used the shoes, a shirt and tie, the chesterfield chair, and the large eye to form the male character who is sat watching her perform. There are then other little details which I feel add to each character, such as the tears showing the womans emotions with the situation, the frilly cuff/clevage to again emphasize a seductive and sexual side to the her and the shape of the hand/glove not only forms her face but I altered the length of it for a curvier shape to hint at the natural shape of a womans bosom and hips as well as using it for a long slender neck.

I think I was actually quite lucky with my choice of colours... We had initially planned for the whole book to be printed in colour, meaning everyones images would've looked exactly how they created them but disjointed. Now I know the stories featuring in the 7x7 book arent linked, nor continuations, but due to the limited budget the choice to print in Black with a single spot colour was made. As I said, I was lucky in that I had already limited my colour range and so it wasnt as big a problem altering my images to using black and blue (the colour we decided on) and I had already been looking at screenprinting my work just for my own benefit... but I now actually prefer the spot colour versions more than the coloured ones I created earlier.

7x7 teaser

Another part of the 7x7 project involves working with a 2nd year Moving Image student to create a short 10-15 second animation. I often admit that I like things done my own way, and I often do them myself so that I know they are done properly but i also like relinquishing control as i usually prefer what someone else makes with an idea than my own interpretation. (i sometimes try too hard to make things look 'Cool' and appealing to everyone). but basically... my initial ideas of a Mad Men/Catch me if you can or animated comic styled piece of work went out the window when I was introduced to Kirsty Newman (i'd add her blog or site.. if i knew it). She really liked the halftone pattern work in my images so I was tasked to create some images for her to use and animate with... Now I must stress... I have been rubbish. It took me ages to actually get the image to her, I was busy editing other peoples artworks ready for printing and separating the layers, but she's been an absolute star with delay after delay as well as putting up with me in general. Anyway, providing this one image was actually harder than i thought purely because of the sheer size it needed to be in order for her to zoom into it!

but as I said, she's a star and has sorted it along with compositing some live action dancing to represent the female character. I know very little of After Effects and Premiere so I have given her free reign over it, but through not giving her the image she needed early enough, Ive put her under a bit of stress to meet her deadline for this friday :( sorry Kirsty. I already told her that I wasn't exactly impressed with my own efforts, nor happy with the image I supplied to her but she actually has it on camera where I say that it's all my fault, I've been useless and that I hate babies... but theres a possibility of us working together again in the future on a couple of side projects... (one being liked to my old figure animation I had planned... Characters and Backgrounds)

7x7 animation

I only have rough ideas in my head for the animation to date... but starting Tuesday afternoon this will again be given a push forward. In terms of how i'd like it to look.. I want it to look great! I'm not a full blown animator but I love the way in which something which was once still/flat/2d can be brought to life.. as shown in the many abundant animated comics out there now.. one of my favourites in particular is the working of Image's Dead Space comic, based on the events before the popular computer and featuring the artwork of Ben Templesmith.

Thinking back to the theme of the story and it's character.. something a little more abstract AND classy springs to mind... Considering the animation will only be 15 seconds long (approx) then I won't have time for a narrative, only hints to the charcters and their relationship etc. For example.. one of my ideas works on the image of smoke rising from a cigarette resting in an ashtray... as the camera pans upwards following the rising trail... the hourglass shape of a woman can now be seen dancing in the silhouette of the smoke... she is dancing and removing her silk opera gloves and the camera can zoom in to the space inbetween her arms.. as it does the male character can be seen... etc..

Sketches to follow...

and I have mentioned it way back when we first touched on the project.. but the intro to the show 'Mad Men' is pretty damn close to what I'm imagining... HERE

Ball Rolling...

Ok, if i don't get started on here again soon then I'm going to be left with a load of research and no heart to sort through it and post it up.. so..

Back to Uni... i've missed it! Can't wait to get my teeth really sunk into the professional side of the projects lined up for this year but at the same time it scares me to death... mainly because we (all of us on the course) seem to lack any confidence in our own work...

- The 7x7 proejct will be slowly coming to a close this month with our illustrations near completion, the layout is happening as we speak and then we aim to send to print by the end of the month. (Details on the 7x7 event and the Manchester Literature Festival can be found HERE.)

- Negotiated Projects: I thought I had a good idea, that changed... I now have another idea.. but that is all it is.. an idea. I am planning on working around existing branding mascots and trying to say something about todays culture, the companies ethics or my own opinions in a satirical manner... without sounding too much like a hypocrite. This will coincide with a 5,000 word journal that I will be writing alongside the project, but as the project outline isn't quite there... the title of the journal isn't either.

- PDP: Now I cannot wait for this! I already have ideas floating around my head and a fair bit of research into areas of self promotion... my main priority at the moment is my negotiated project... so.. i'm hanging fire on the details of this for now...

Ron English...

Nowadays, everyone has heard of/seen some form anti-McDonalds campaign.. so much so that it is almost too easy to suggest that McDonalds food is unhealthy.. but through Juxtapoz magazine... I came across Ron English's 'Supersized Ronald McDonald'...

as well as these videos showing what he's know for, why he does it and how...

more later... but this is what I meant about being a hypocrite.. I have eaten at McDonalds.. I know its not the healthiest option but without researching into the companies food preparation methods or their ethics etc... I'm none the wiser and would probably continue eating there occassionally.

Tiger Tots

I've not done as much as I could have over the last couple of months, but I think I've earnt myself a well deserved break.. and now I'm tryin to jump start my imagination battery! Having recently tried taking up some martial arts I came up with this idea of a character for the classes aimed at younger children called "Tiger Tots"...

a few sketches adn reworks later, I think the positioning is about right. but I'm posting this really to get back into the flow of things really.. pencil sketches and tracing paper, then digitally sketched over the larger image..

Hopefully when I finish this, I will have made it into a vector, added colour and it could possibly be printed on flyers, booklets, t-shirts, bags or maybe jsut used online.. who knows? or they could not like it! :)
